RPL Application Process

1. How:

The applicant must visit the University website, www.uj.ac.za and click on “study at UJ” link.  After clicking on the link, the applicant will be directed to the application web page.

The applicant must then click “Recognition of Prior Learning” link. The link has information on RPL guidelines, application form and RPL Request form. The applicant must download the application form and RPL Request form. Complete and attach the following documents and email them to [email protected]:

  • Certified copy of National Senior Certificate or relevant school leaving certificate
  • Certified copy of academic record of highest qualification obtained
  • Certified copy of Identity Document (South African citizens) or Passport (International applicants)
  • Proof of payment of the R200.00 application fee (banking details on the UJ Application form) – which includes the RPL request fee

2. When

RPL applicants should apply using the online portal (above) between Jan -April of the year before they intend to continue their studies. The process of RPL takes approximately a year to complete, because of the rigour of the process. Therefore, a candidate wishing to be considered for the RPL process needs to have gathered all evidence of previous qualifications and professional development before the application process starts (using the link provided above).

3. Who should apply:

RPL is “the comparison of previous learning and experience of a student, howsoever obtained, against the learning outcomes required for a specific qualification and the acceptance of such learning for purposes of qualification of that which meets the requirements” (SAQA Regulation 452, No. 18787, March 1998:5).

You can apply for RPL if you have developed skills and knowledge through work experience. Learning from experience refers to work experience, in-service training, and self-study or life experience, such as voluntary or community work.

Specifically, in Hospitality – we would target people in the industry that have completed a block release certificate in hospitality management or the ‘old’ certificates in food and beverage management. (NQF level 5)

At present, we are not RPL ing all certificates at NQF 5. Certain private culinary providers’ curriculum do not meet the quota of theoretical rigour required, specifically in financial management but also including law and management. Without formal evidence in these areas – it is not possible to accept only work experience as evidence.

Most qualifications from private providers at NQF 6 require status confirmation and are not RPLs.  These applicants require a letter from their provider and full academic record. This Status process follows the normal online application process and is not seen by the Department unless a query exists.
