University Of Johannesburg LLM

The UJ Faculty of Law offers the traditional law programmes such as BA Law, BCom Law and LLB, as well as LLM degrees by dissertation and coursework and LLD degrees in various important fields. In addition to these degrees, the Faculty has a strong non-formal programmes division that offers postgraduate diplomas, certificates and short courses in specialised areas such as tax law, compliance, criminal justice and forensic investigation, insolvency law, labour law, corporate law, environmental law, drafting of contracts and entertainment law.

Purpose of the qualification

The purpose of this qualification is to enable a student to demonstrate an ability to master at an advanced level the current state of knowledge on a given topic within a particular branch of the law.

The purpose of the three taught modules is to develop the student’s intellectual and theoretical competencies at an advanced level, and to strengthen his/her ability to understand the different fields of study and related law from the viewpoint of a critical analysis of the underlying principles and a comparative evaluation of the application value of foreign data.

The purpose of the minor dissertation is to develop the student’s capacity to give a scientific account of and apply the knowledge in the area of the different fields of study and related law that he/she has gained through literature study.

General rules of access

The minimum entry requirement is an LLB degree (or equivalent qualification) – 65% average.
