The School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE) at the University of Johannesburg falls under the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment and was formed in 2010, together with the School of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Mines, Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering.
The school runs accredited National Diploma, Undergraduate courses and Postgraduate degrees programmes.

Civil Engineering is the practice of developing, improving and maintaining the built and natural environments to enhance the quality of life and increase work efficiency. Key academic focus areas include water, structures, transport, geotechnical engineering, project management, civil engineering materials, urban development and design.
Scope of Work
Civil Engineers make important decisions, control assignments, think logically and work systematically. They are responsible for the design, planning and supervision of construction of structures. These include water supply systems (dams and major pipelines), transportation systems (roads, railways, bridges, airports and harbours) and buildings (sports stadiums, office blocks, shopping centres and convention centres). A Civil Engineer has the most broadly-based education and experience within a civil engineering team. He or she generally assumes leadership and undertakes responsibility for extending engineering knowledge to new and innovative projects.

Town and Regional Planners plan and develop the infrastructure of towns and cities and are therefore key players as South Africa works towards improving spatial and social imbalances in urban and rural areas across the country.
The field of Town and Regional Planning covers land-use planning, urban design, transport and infrastructure planning, use and extension of information technology, heritage and conservation, resource management, environmental monitoring, commercial and industrial development, policy-making and implementation, as well as planning law and practice.
Town and Regional Planners help communities, companies and governments to integrate the environmental, economic and social aspects of development. They are involved with land-use, working in a professional team to plan, design, implement and manage development.
Town and Regional Planners must consider all economic, sociological, geological, architectural, industrial and geographical factors to bring about efficient functioning of a town or region.
Town and Regional Planning technicians and technologists are required in the private and public sectors. Graduates can seek employment with national, regional and local authorities as well as with consultants and developers.

The Department is home to five specialised laboratories and two research groups which focus on concrete as a construction material and on soil compaction. The programme is designed to ensure graduates are skilled with knowledge and application of a range of engineering technology services. Civil engineering technicians are trained to provide a broad base of engineering technology services such as surveying, drafting, computer applications and modelling, soil, concrete, evaluation and design, road and highway analysis, traffic analysis, hydraulics, construction engineering, municipal infrastructure and project management.
Scope of Work
Professional development and responsibilities include planning, design and construction of physical infrastructures in addition to management and inspection of construction process. These include buildings, bridges, highways, streets, parks, dams, drainage and irrigation systems, water supply and sewer collection systems, and commercial and industrial facilities.
