The Faculty of Education at UJ is committed to knowledge making for 21st century education. To this end, the Faculty offers two Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programmes as of 2021. Both focus on secondary school teaching – one on the Further Education and Training Teaching phase and the other on Senior Phase Teaching.

School-based Work Integrated Learning (WIL), including supervised and assessed teaching practice, is an important part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education programme. Students are expected to spend up to ten weeks of WIL in schools in which one period consists of seven consecutive weeks. Through integrating coursework at the university and practicum at schools the

Faculty creates learning opportunities for student-teachers to acquire: 
o A thorough understanding of learning and development in adolescence
o Sound subject knowledge with an understanding of contextual factors that impact learning and schooling
o An appreciation of the demands of the teaching profession and a repertoire of teaching strategies and skills
o A reflective stance towards teaching.

BEd Honours Degree​​
If you already have a teaching degree or diploma and wish to continue your studies, this is the next step in your professional development.

Master’s Degree
If you have a teaching qualification and some teaching experience, or another suitable four-year professional bachelor’s degree with some professional experience, and wish to conduct some research in your field, this is the degree for you. We offer both course work and  dissertation-only options.
Doctorate Degree (PhD) 
If you have an appropriate Master’s degree, plus work experience in the field of study and wish to conduct research in a specialised field, this may be the option for you. Students complete a thesis on an approved topic in the field of Education and they attend a short learning programme in research methodology.
Post Graduate Certificate in Education-PGCE 
If you have  any bachelor’s degree with school subjects or an approved National Diploma including school subjects and wish to become a teacher, this one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme will qualify you to do so

Application for MEd in Educational Psychology 
This application form is for students wishing to apply for a Master’s in Educational Psychology. It can be completed by hand or typed and submitted to the sp​ecified address. International applicants should report to the International Office to receive additional information.
Master’s Application Form
This application form in for prospective Master’s students in Education. It can be completed by hand or typed and submitted to the specified address.
