UJ Architecture, Architectural professionals are involved in shaping our built environment. Diploma in Architecture (D8AT1Q)

The programme addresses knowledge fields in architecture. It emphasises the relationship between design and technology and focuses on design concepts and design development using an interdisciplinary design approach. It prepares students for further study or registration and employment as Candidate Architectural Technologists (SACAP Part 1).

Career Opportunities
The architectural profession offers a wide range of specialisations, from management to technology and design.
Graduates will be able to register with the following professional bodies or institutes:
— South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP)
— South African Institute for Architectural Technologists (SAIAT)
— Provincial Institutes of the SA Institute of Architects.
Admission Requirements — Diploma of Architecture (D8AT1Q)
— Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification with a minimum APS or M-score (as below) and degree admission.
— Submission of a prescribed portfolio once the application form has been processed.
Recommended school subjects include Art, Technical Drawing and/or Physical Science or Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD).
Average Point Score (APS)
A minimum APS of 23 is required to apply for the programme. Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this
programme.

  • Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be invited by the Faculty to submit a portfolio.
  • Portfolios must be submitted online.
PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

Portfolio Requirements Architecture Degree and Diploma

The following documentation must accompany your portfolio:

  •  A handwritten or preferably typed A4 page declaring that the work you have submitted is wholly and truly yours.

Bachelor of Architecture (B8BA3Q)

An entry level qualification that covers the major knowledge fields in architecture. The programme focuses on a theoretical understanding of design and architecture in order to prepare students for further study and/or registration as Candidate Architectural Technologists.

The Department’s offerings have unconditional validation from the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) and the Commonwealth Association for Architecture (CAA).

Purpose of the programme

The Bachelor of Architecture Honours programme is designed to prepare students for entry into the architectural profession at ‘Candidate Senior Architectural Technologists’ registration category
(as defined by the South African Council for the Architectural Profession [SACAP]) and for entry into either into the professional master of architecture or the research masters programmes.

Admission requirements

  • A BTech (Architectural Technology) Applied Design degree that carries SACAP ‘Part 1’ and accreditation, with an average mark of 60% and at least 60% for the modules Applied Design 4 and Theory of Design 4. For internal (UJ) candidates who have achieved the minimum admission requirements, no interview is required, although this may be requested;
  • A BAS or equivalent degree that carries SACAP ‘Part 1’ accreditation with a 60% average and at least 60% for exit level Design and Design Theory-related modules. Applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of design work and attend an interview;
  • An equivalent qualification at an equivalent standard (national or international), as determined by the GPA Admissions Committee after submission of a portfolio and/or interview of the applicant’s own design work.

Selection criteria

Potential students are required to submit a portfolio and attend an interview. The assessment of both the portfolio and interview will be done by a panel of assessor(s) appointed by the Graduate Programme of Architecture (GPA) Admissions Committee
